Let me start by reminding you that we are always on the move. The church is not a building or an event, but a people who live on mission in the everyday stuff of life. This means that we don’t go to church on Sunday, because we are the church. On Sunday, the church goes to worship. With this in mind, the location for our Sunday worship gathering is about to change. Many of you came to worship on May 15th when we met at the Ursuline Academy Performing Arts Center and expressed excitement about the possibility of meeting there weekly. I have good news! Starting on June 12th, we will make the transition from meeting at Fournier Hall to meeting at the PAC.

Before I outline some of the reasons why this is a good move for us, let me tell you that this is where I wanted us to hold our Sunday worship gatherings from the beginning. Last summer when we were looking for a location in preparation for our launch, the PAC got my attention, but wasn’t available. It was only when we had to start looking for an alternate location for a few dates in May and June of this year that we discovered that it was now a possibility. I tell you this so you have an idea of how God led us and provided this opportunity.

Now, some of the reasons why this is a good move…

1. The PAC is centrally located. It’s in between the Cool Spring Park and the Cool Spring Reservoir Plaza, within walking distance for many coming from Cool Spring, Little Italy, and Trolley Square. It’s also conveniently located for those coming from outside the city on I-95. While it keeps us on the West Side where we have established a presence, it also gives us the feel of being connected to downtown where many CCW people work since it is so close to 95. (By the way, there is a very cool view of downtown from the front steps of the building!)

2. Parking is easy since there is a parking lot adjacent to the building.

3. We can keep a permanent sign out front with our worship time and website listed.

4. As you know, we are limited with children’s ministry at Fournier Hall since we have to do it in the lobby. At the PAC, there is a large lower level where we will have plenty of space and flexibility for ministering the gospel to our children each Sunday.

5. Since we will no longer have to do children’s ministry in the lobby, the lobby at the PAC will provide us with an inviting space to welcome visitors where we can provide coffee and hospitality.

6. The space is big, with plenty of room for us to grow as a congregation. Besides using the space on Sunday’s, the possibility exists for us to use it at other times as well.

7. Not only will we be able to store all of our equipment there as we did at Fournier Hall, we will also be able to leave everything set up most weeks. Think about that! No more set up and tear down each week. We actually had it made before as a church plant since we could keep everything stored at Fournier Hall. Now we will just be spoiled :)

8. The cost of renting the PAC will actually be cheaper than Fournier Hall.

Finally, there is one downside: the air conditioning does not work. As you know, we had hoped to possibly raise funds to replace the system, but the estimate we received was way out of reach. We believe that God has clearly led us to this space so we are working on ways we can keep it cool during the summer months. This overall is such a good opportunity for us that we couldn’t turn it down. I’m looking forward to this next step on June 12th as God positions us to make His Story of redemption known to our city and beyond!

The church is not an event we attend or a building we go to. The church is a community of people who follow Jesus in the everyday stuff of life. Home groups are a critical expression of City Church as they provide a relational environment for people to belong and live in God’s Story together. They are safe places for people to journey in the hope of Christ through friendship building, sharing, prayer, Bible study, and service.

Here we go…

On Sunday, September 26th, we will begin our weekly worship service on Sunday mornings at 10:30 am. The initial location for this service will be the William Lewis Elementary School (click here for directions – we will use the 10th street entrance across from the Cool Spring Park). We will meet there for the first six weeks before moving to what will be our more permanent location on Nov 7th at Fournier Hall in Little Italy. These locations are not far from each other so the transition should be an easy one.

We are grateful to God for answering our prayers by providing these facilities for us. I look forward to celebrating the gospel with you in these places each Sunday morning.

Home groups will start the week of the 27th. Details will be coming in the next few days. These are exciting times!

Launch Update

As many of you know, we originally planned to launch weekly worship on Sunday, September 12th. However, God had different plans for our community as it took much longer than anticipated to locate worship space, causing us to delay our launch by a few weeks. Well, we have good news to share…

Our weekly worship gathering will be held at Fournier Hall (1816 Howland Street) in Little Italy. Fournier Hall is owned by Saint Anthony’s Church (yes, the St. Anthony’s that hosts the annual Italian Festival!) and is located a few blocks from their actual church building. It’s a banquet hall with plenty of space, including secure storage for our “stuff.” The price is also well within what we have budgeted for a rental facility. What I am most thankful for is that it allows us to have a presence in a particular neighborhood – a neighborhood I just so happen to live in.

The only catch (don’t worry, it’s a minor one) is that we can’t begin meeting there until November 7th. Does this mean that we are going to delay the launch of weekly worship until then? NO. The plan is to launch weekly worship sometime before November at a temporary location not too far from Fournier Hall. We do not yet know where this will be, but we hope to have an update sometime next week.

In the meantime, we will do our Sunday night gathering at The Wilmington Jaycees (1309 N. Scott Street) this Sunday (the 5th) and next Sunday (the 12th) at 6:30pm. The hope is to announce when we will begin weekly worship no later than next Sunday the 12th. Info on home groups will also be coming next week as well.

Preview Services

Preview services offer a “preview” of what a worship service will be like at City Church. We’re doing three of them over the summer before going weekly in September. These services will be held at the Delaware Theatre Company on the Riverfront (200 Water Street). Here are the dates:

Sunday, June 13th, 10:15 am

Sunday, July 18th, 10:15 am

Sunday, August 15th, 10:15 am
